Can't Install Norton Security For Mac: Transfer Your Service to a New Device

Purchased a new 2021 Apple iMac 27 Inch 5K Retina with Intel Core i9-3.6GHz 10 Core processor, 128GB DDR4 2667GHz RAM, AMD Radian Pro 5700XT 16GB GPU in early July 2021 that came with Mac OS Big Sur 11.5 factory installed. I already have a Norton 360 Premium subscription that I've used on my MSI GT76 Titan DT-039 4K Windows 10 Pro Gaming notebook for last 2 years that works flawlessly & comes with the full feature tool set of fully functional software such as Norton Backup, Norton Safe Search Browser protection, Performance monitor, etc.. Since Norton 360 Premium comes with 10 Licenses for PC's & Mac's and I only use 1 of the 10 figured I'd install Norton 360 on my new iMac as well. Had no issues installing Norton 360 on the iMac with Mac OS Big Sur 11.5. Despite the Mac version of Norton 360 having only Basic functionality (ie.Virus Scanning but none of the many other Norton 360 Premium tools for Windows 10 PC's) it worked perfectly for almost 3 weeks. Once my iMac installed the latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 update Norton 360 ceased to function. It would no longer open at all, instead a Norton 360 popup window appeared on screen t endlessly searching for itself & required a forced shutdown to close. I quickly realized it obviously had something to do with Apple's latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 security update. I tried uninstalling Norton 360 from my iMac using the Norton Mac removal tool & restarting system. Oddly the non functioning Norton 360 Ap remained on the task bar after restart with no functionality as before. Finally I followed Apple's Mac OS Big Sur support instructions for removing software by simply going into my Applications folder, finding & placing the Norton AP into the Trash bin & emptying it. Restarted iMac again and this time Norton 360 was completely removed from the system. Signed back into my Norton account, downloaded & installed Norton 360 all over again. Once Norton 360 installer completed installation I was alerted that Norton 360 has been successfully installed. You must restart your iMac in order to authorize Norton 360. Restarted iMac & Norton 360 isn't installed at all? I have AppleCare+ for my new iMac so I had Apple's highest tier Mac Tech support spend over an hour literally connected to my iMac also assisting me with Norton 360 not installing after Apple's latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 security update. Apple support thoroughly checked every security setting & everything on my iMac to ensure that nothing was blocking or preventing Norton 360 from installing on my systems end & then guided me through the Norton 360 install each step of the way. Norton 360 installer would state that it was installed, must restart system. After restart Norton 360 nowhere on iMac. Apple support states current version of Norton 360 for Mac incompatible with Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1. Until NortonLifeLock updates Norton 360 for Mac to work with this latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 update, it's no longer compatible. Apple support added the only security needed on a Mac is already built into Mac OS. Third party Security software isn't needed on Mac's. I'll continue using my Norton 360 Premium on my Windows notebook but I'll take Apple supports advice & forget about Norton 360 for Mac.

This was a helpful article. I had the same issues, reinstalled Norton 360, received notification that it was installed successfully, but could not find it in my applications. Spent well over an hour of time that I don't have going over the instructions, repeating the process several times with the same result. I'll notify Norton requesting that they alert me once Norton is compatible with the latest version of Big Sur. Since I have Norton on my HP Pavilion, I'll keep the subscription. However, if the incompatibility continues, I'll consider using a competitor that is compatible with Big Sur. It bothers me to pay for premium service with no applicability on my primary computer.

Can 039;t Install Norton Security For Mac

Hi GeorgeA Pate, It would appear that you're in the same predicament as I. Having a Windows system that Norton 360 works great on, but also having a Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 system that the current version of Norton 360 is incompatible with. For now I'm taking Apple Mac supports advice & keeping unnecessary Third party Security software like Norton 360 or any others off my new iMac. The security features already built into Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 are more than adequate to handle all security needed for Mac's. Why waste valuable disk space installing troublesome Third Party Security software? Most Third Party Security software is proven to slow down performance on Mac's while essentially adding little to no benefits anyhow?

Hi Anotherkoko I feel your pain. Just an FYI the Norton Password Manager is a beta software w/ many issues that doesn't even run that well on the much more compatible Windows 10 version of Norton 360 Premium. If I were you I'd uninstall that garbage pronto! The one difference between us is that I own an MSI GT76 Titan dt-039 4K gaming notebook running Windows 10 Pro OS that my Norton 360 Premium & all it's features (except Norton Password Manager) works great on. All my other systems are Mac's though, running latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 security update so the 9 additional Norton 360 Premium licenses I have are wasted unless Norton Lifelock provides a fix for Norton 360 for current updated Mac's. If I were you, I'd uninstall Norton 360 entirely from your new iMac 24". That is unless you like having an unnecessary, problematic & currently incompatible Third Party Security software like Norton 360 wasting your valuable time on your beautiful new iMac 24"? To remove Norton 360 from your iMac simply open your Application folder & place everything w/ Norton 360 in your recycle bin, then empty it. Restart your iMac. Enable your Firewall that Norton disabled after restarting your iMac. Apple's Mac Tech support advises removing Norton 360 from your iMac until Norton Lifelock provides a compatible, functioning Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 version. They also claim Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 already has all the built in security your Mac needs & don't recommend installing Third Party Security software like Norton or any others on Mac's. Since my iMac 27" 5K Retina & my wife's Mac Pro 16" are both new I'm taking Apple's advice & leaving Norton 360 & other Third Party Security software off my Mac's. I know that Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 is secure b/c anything I attempt to download, install & run that doesn't come directly from Apple's AP Store always requires Appleid & password to approve & complete. Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 built in Security is all we need for safety on Mac. Everything you do on Mac requires your Appleid & password, what more security do you think you'd need then that anyway? Check to see if Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.1 is considered HIPPA compliant, I believe it is! Save your money for better things than unnecessary Third Party Security software for Mac.

I received a call today from the norton level 2 team about our on going issues with 360 & big sur. He suggested downloading 360 via another mac user account since some legacy configuration can cause issues. He also said:

Hi, I have the same problem. Mac OS got upgraded to BigSur 11.5.2 and Norton stopped working. So uninstalled Norton and reinstalled it which was successful and then restarted but Norton does not show up in the Applications list. Is there any official update or timeline by when this issue will be fixed ? Basically we won't have any virus protection which is serious till this problem is fixed.

Aside from the fact that Norton Lifelock's current version of Norton 360 for Mac is not compatible with Mac's running Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2 (as we all here know) despite Norton Supports complete denial, the one fact still remaining is that Apple's own iMac Tech support recommends not installing Third Party Security Software like Norton 360 on your Mac anyway? Apple Support states "Mac users running the latest Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2 have all the security they need already built into the OS." I've owned many Windows systems over the years that actually do require Third Party Security Software so I can relate to believing Mac's would require it also to be safe. However I believe Apple Support's statement that Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2 has all the security you need on a Mac to be safe. Whenever I use my new iMac 27 Inch 5K Retina (i9-3.6GHz 10 Core CPU, 128GB DDR4-2667GHz RAM, AMD Radian Pro 5700XT 16GB GPU, 4TB NVMe SSD) running Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2 using any of 3 user accounts everything you do on it requires your AppleID & Password to complete. That's way stricter security then I have on my Windows 10 Pro notebook running fully compatible Norton 360 Premium for Windows. I recommend following Apple Supports advice to leave Norton 360 Security off your already secure Mac's. Save yourselves the hassle of trying to install this unnecessary & incompatible Norton 360 on your Mac's. Apple will be introducing an entirely new Mac OS in the fall so the Norton 360 problems will most like get worse!
